What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

1) The next Social Planning Council Meeting is on Sept 23, 2013

The next SPC meeting is being held at the IMSS building located at…. 118C N 1st Avenue. The meeting this month will begin at 11:45 am (rather than 11:30). Come join us for lunch.

2) Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy (CCPL) is looking for seniors

The CCPL is looking for seniors who would like to learn about computers and who would like to share their stories. This project matches seniors with students for three to five sessions starting this month. 3) Cariboo Regional District Library – Fall events & programs

National Film Board Screenings*:

The Fruit Hunters (Directed by Yung Chang)  – Sept 26th at 7 pm

The Fruit Hunters travels across culture, history and geography to show how intertwined we are with the fruits we eat. Our guides are devoted fruit fanatics such as movie star Bill Pullman, whose obsession leads him on a crusade to create a community orchard in the Hollywood.

Fall Children’s Programming:

Baby & Me: Caregiver & Babies - pregnancy up to 18 months. Preregistration preferred but drop-ins welcome: Babies learn about language right from birth, join us Wednesdays for a “just right for baby time” as we use songs, nursery rhymes, letter knowledge and new technology to explore pre-literacy skills together. Wednesdays, 10:05am-10:25am

Toddlers Too: Caregivers & Toddlers. Drop-in: Have fun reading, sharing and singing as we improve our literacy skills with special puppets and interactive activities to encourage our learning. Wednesdays, 10:30am-11:00am

Friday Story Fun Time. Parent stays to help out if child is under 3 years of age. Drop-in: Join us on Friday mornings for puppets, singing, silly songs, rhymes, interactive books, themed story days and a craft. Fridays, 10:30am-11:15am

Wii Gaming - for children 8+:  Wednesdays, 3:30- 4:30 Free. Register at desk by 4:00pm Tuesday

4) Cariboo Chilcotin Metis Association’s AGM

The Cariboo Chilcotin Metis Association’s is holding it’s Annual General Meeting on Sept 18th at 6pm at 171 Hickory Road in Wildwood.

5) SPCA’s Paws for a Cause Walk – Sept 15th

The annual walk will start in Boitanio Park  with registration beginning at 9am and the first walk out at 10 am. Register online at spca.bc.ca

6) Terry Fox Run – Sept 15th

On Sunday Sept 15 at 9 am, starting at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex is the annual Terry Fox Run. The 5 or 10 km route are suitable for bikes, rollerblades, wheelchairs, strollers and dogs on a leash are also welcome.

7) StrongStart Centres open again

Summer is over and StrongStart is beginning again for the school year. StrongStart Centres are school based early learning centres facilitated by an Early Childhood Educator. They are free, drop-in sessions for children up to the age of five and their parents &/or caregivers. StrongStart Centres are located at Cataline, Mountview, Marie Sharpe, Alexis Creek, 150 Mile and Horsefly schools. 8) Williams Lake and District Credit Union’s Community Investment Grant Funds – applications due Sept 30th

9) United Way’s Kickoff Campaign Breakfast – Sept 20th

You are invited to the 1st Annual Campaign Kick-off Breakfast from 6 – 9 am on Friday Sept 20th. Come through the “drive thru” at the Williams Lake and District Credit Union for breakfast by donation.

10) Memorial Complex Recreation Centre – fall leisure guide programs

The new Fall/Winter 2013/2014 Active Living Guide is now available at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex and/or at www.activewilliamslake.ca. Open this colorful guide to find a superb selection of activities and events to participate in this fall and winter. The Fitness Centre reopens on Tuesday, September 3 and Sam Ketcham Pool reopens on Monday, September 9 at 5:30 am. Call us at 250.398.7665 to check hours or visit the above website.

11) BC Hydro’s 2013 edition of our Community Champions program

BC Hydro is looking for non-profit organizations to submit video entries that tell us what they are doing to make their community more sustainable. Videos will be accepted until September 30th.

Up to 15 finalists will be selected for public voting between October 15 and November 15, and 5 winners will each receive $10,000 to continue their sustainability-based projects.

If you are aware of any non-profit groups in your community that may be interested in this program, please share this opportunity with them.

12) Cariboo Welcome Fair 

Saturday, September 28, from 2pm to 4pm, Thompson Rivers University and Welcoming Communities Williams Lake plan to fill the gym at TRU for the Cariboo Welcome Fair, a free, family-friendly event. Newcomers to the region will learn about services and organizations that can help them make connections in the community.

Local businesses and community organizations, as well as health, education, and government organizations, are invited to book a table in order to present information and answer questions about the work they do in the community. Local arts and volunteer groups may wish to have sign-up sheets for future events and workshops.

There will be door prizes, food vendors, and a children’s activity area with music and story-telling. Most importantly, there will be local people on hand who live, work, and play in the community to share information, make suggestions, and offer practical help.

The Cariboo Welcome Fair is an opportunity for the community to get to know what is available to make everyone feel at home in the Cariboo. Table bookings and entry to the fair are free to all.

This event, and the work of the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society in Williams Lake, is made possible by grants from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, through the Welcome BC program.

13) Women’s Contact Society office – location has changed

The Women’s Contact Society will be moving locations at the end of September to 51-4th Avenue into the building with CMHA.
