What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

2) Punky LakeBeginners Drum Group
Come out & learn to drum or learn new songs. Free to join every second Tuesday starting Apr 8th. Doors open at 6pm and ends at 8pm at the Denisiqi Service Society at 253 - 4th Ave North. 4) 2014 KidSport Grant Application Guidelines
KidSport is a community based sport funding program established in 1993 by Sport BC. KidSport provides  grants for children ages 18 and under to participate in a sport season of their choice. There are 40 community  chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. KidSport works to fulfill its mission of eliminating the financial barriers to sport participation, ‘So ALL Kids Can Play!’ For more information, please visit  www.kidsport.bc.ca

5) Williams Lake Film Club - Apr 8th at 7pm - "Dirty Wars"
The film Dirty Wars is a chilling battle cry for the soul and conscience of an America few of us know exists. Tuesday Apr 8th at 7pm in the Gibralter Room (doors open at 6:30 pm). General admission $9, Members $8, Seniors & students $6

6) Scout Island Nature Centre - 2014 fundraising banquet's "Ocean Wonders" Apr 11th
Join guest speaker Jackie Hildering (teacher, diver, underwater photographer and whale researcher) presents "The Marine Detective" at St. Andrews United Church Hall at 6pm (dinner is at 6:30pm). Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for ages 16 and under. Available from Williams Lake Field Naturalists, SINC and The Open Book.

7) Workshop - Eat Local All Winter presented by Mackin Creek Farm on Apr 17th
Mackin Creek Farm will share tips and techniques for storing food for the winter including drying, root cellaring, freezing and canning. This workshop will illustrate how you save money by buying or growing vegetables in season and how to enjoy local food all winter. Thursday Apr 17th from 7 - 9 pm at the Gibralter Room (16 years and over).  $25 and to register call the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex at 250-398-7665.

8) Community Employment Action Plan (CAEP)- looking for employees?
Through the CAEP, Community Living BC is working with individuals, families and community partners to increase understanding of the benefits of hiring adults with developmental disabilities and to increase employment.

More and more people who live with the label of a developmental disability are wanting to work. Research shows that 98% work safer, stay on the job 5x longer, have 86% greater attendance records, create 20% higher productivity and 80% of consumers prefer to support businesses with diverse workforces.

9) Prevention of Violence Against Women Week - Apr 13 - 19th
You may feel it is none of your business, however it could be a matter of life or death. Violence is everyone's business, it isn't a private matter when someone is being hurt. Contact the Womens Contact Society at 250-392-4118 to get involved.

10 Good Neighbour Bylaw Draft - send your feedback
The SPC has been asked to provide comments and feedback to the City of Williams Lake regarding the draft Good Neighour Bylaw. Please see the attachment and send your feedback and comments to the Social Planning Council for submission to the City of Williams Lake at spc-coordinator@xplornet.com.

11) Williams Lake Wanderers Group - April 2014 schedule of events
To join this group, come about 9:15 am to the Cariboo Memorial Complex on a Tues, Wed or Thursday. We always begin our outings from there, so you can fill out a membership form and pay your $10 annual fee. We leave at 9:30 am. Once you're a member, you will receive emails with schedule and schedule changes. Schedules and updates are also on Facebook.

We have optimistically scheduled bike rides in April, but will be dependent on weather/road conditions. Check your schedule daily.

12) Northern BC Citizen Series Webinars - Apr 24th from 1:30 - 3:30 pm
"Too Much of a Good Thing? Social Impacts of Rapid Industrial Growth in Rural Communities".

Building on last year's May 2013 webinar, join us for this session which looks more closely at the social, economic and cultural impacts of rapid industrial development on communities.
