What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

2) Central Cariboo Grant for Assistance Application - Sept 30th deadline
On an annual basis, the City of Williams Lake and Electoral Areas D, E & F of the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) jointly provide Grants for Assistance to local non-profit organizations for projects, activities and events that strengthen and enhance the well being of the community, promote volunteerism and support the goals and priorities of the City and CRD.

To qualify you must:
Be a registered not-for-profit organization in good standing
Provide the most recent AGM report, financial statement and budget
Demonstrate financial need
Provide a service, project or event that supports the priorities and goal of the City and CRD

You do not qualify if:
You offer direct financial assistance
Duplicate or replace existing services
Support a provincial or national fundraising campaign, or
You are of a commercial nature.

Application forms can be picked up and submitted to the City or CRD office. Deadline is Sept 30th. For more information please contact the City or CRD directly.

3) Earth Dance - Global Peace Party - this Sunday Sept 21st
The Earth Dance Global Peace Party is taking place at the Likely Community Hall on Sept 21st.
Prayers & Healing/Sharing Circle - 12 pm, Dance from 1:30 - 4pm, Global Peace Prayer at 4pm, and Potluck at 4:30 pm.

4) Cariboo Chilcotin Child Development Centre - Anniversary event Sept 27th from 2 - 4 pm
Come celebrate the CDC's 40th Anniversary in Williams Lake on Saturday Sept 27th from 2 - 4 pm. Celebration includes the release of the Society's History Book tracing 40 years of working with the community to help children. Goodies and refreshments will be available at the Aileen Hewett building at 690 North Second Avenue. Reservations are greatly appreciated - call 250-392-4481 or email cdcadmin@cccdca.org.

5) Studio Theatre's AGM - Sept 26th at 6:30 pm
The AGM is a great way to visit the Theatre if you haven't been, meet volunteers, and be entertained. This year there is going to be five 10 minute long readings from five different upcoming plays. 6) BC Achievement Foundation 2015 Awards Nomination Information
Council received notice of the twelfth annual BC Community Achievement Awards, and encourages members of the  community to submit nominations. More information can be found at www.bcachievement.com.

7) Walk for Harmony Parade - September 30, 2014
The Walk For Harmony parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30 (Orange Shirt Day), and encouraged the community to participate.

Cariboo Chilcotin Mental Health Association, the Women’s Spirituality Circle, and the Orange Shirt Day Committee are partnering by holding the walk on Orange Shirt Day. The Walk for Harmony aims to increase awareness about  issues such as diversity in our community and racism and violence. It is a public statement of support that racism, both personal and systemic, needs to be eliminated if our society is to thrive.

This year, there will be three streams of walkers, all finishing at Boitanio Park:

1. From Marie Sharpe Elementary east along Cameron St., then south along 5th
Ave.
2. From Lake City Secondary, Carson Campus, south along  Carson and then south along 5th Ave.
3. From Courthouse Square at Oliver and 1st Ave, east along Oliver St., then north along 7th Ave., and finally east along  Borland to the St. Joseph’s Memorial.

8) Connect Parent Program  - begins Oct 8 - Dec 10th
The Connect program is a partnership between Simon Fraser University, the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre and MCFD. It has been developed for parents and caregivers of pre-teens and teens based on research examining:

Attachment,
Child & Adolescent Development, Mental Health and Social Well-Being,
Parenting and Family Functioning,
Prevention and Intervention Research,
Parent’s Feedback, and
Short and Long Term Effectiveness.

We have always received very positive feedback from participants who attended and research has proven that this program is very helpful for caregivers and families.

10) Brainstorming Accessibility with the CCACS's Arts Centre Accessibility Task Force
Following June's Arts Centre Operations and Management Review, we are pleased to announce the first meeting of the Arts Centre Accessibility Task Force. All Arts Centre users are invited to join the discussion on September 29th 2014, from 4-5 pm, in the Open Studio at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre. This meeting, facilitated by CCACS Director Sharon Taylor, is an opportunity to brainstorm directions towards an Arts Centre that is more accessible to it's users and the general public.

At the meeting we will hear from Geoff Paynton, Director of Community Services for the City of Williams Lake. Joan Sorley will bring an interesting perspective to the table, as the CRD's liaison to the CCACS who has past experience as a safety consultant. Also in attendance will be the newly appointed Arts Centre Management Committee, Jane Perry and Melissa Newberry, as well as the new Arts centre Administrator, Brandon Hoffman. "Healthy Bite" Vegetarian Supper Club will resume Sunday, Sept 28, at 6pm. Please bring a large 'dish' to share, the recipe, and a friend!  782 North 9th Avenue.
