What is The Social Planning Council?

Activities:

o Monthly Meetings: Attend meetings with guest speakers from within the community &/or presentations at each meeting. We currently meet the fourth Monday of every month (excluding summer) at City Hall with light lunch by donation.

o Facebook & Email Group: Utilize the network on Facebook. Start discussions, learn about & share upcoming community events, projects and meetings. If you don’t use Facebook, then join the email network instead.

o Inform City Council: The SPC provides reports to City Council regularly and the City keeps the SPC informed. Use the network and have your voices heard.



Strategic Direction of the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake & Area:

o Poverty Reduction and the local Living Wage Campaign.

o Community Collaboration and Networking.

o Retention and Succession of residents within the Area.



Community Social Planning:

o Supports communities in building an integrated approach to complex problems that take into account social, economic, and environmental concerns.

o Maximizes the effectiveness of often scarce resources by working to reduce duplication, overlap and competition.

o Provides an ongoing forum for communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

The Social Planning Council would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Thank-you to everyone who makes Williams Lake a wonderful place to live, work and play. Our office will be closed for the Holidays and will re-open on Monday Jan 5th. Remember to call Operation Red Nose this season if you are unable to drive your own car home safely - for further information please call 250-392-2222.

2) Register now for the Library's Armchair Travel Series - next show is Jan 8th
There are six presentation lined up for this next series. The first presentation is on Jan 8th at 6:30 pm - Rita Seibert kicks of the series with Yangtze tour in China. 3) United Way's Community Investment Funding - applications due Jan 30th
United Way provides funding to strengthen the network of services and capacity of non-profits to achieve meaningful, long-term improvements in quality of life in the community by addressing not just the symptoms of problems but also the root causes.

Our Community Investment process is open to receive applications from non-profits with charitable status as of December 1st, 2014 throughout the Thompson Nicola Cariboo region. The deadline for applications will be January 30th, 2015. The application is available only on-line at www.investingincommunity.ca.

5) Warm Clothing Drive - Friday Dec 19th from 9am - 5pm
Sutton-Cariboo Realty's warm & fuzzy open house goes on until today at 5pm to collect warm winter clothing for people in need. Donations of gently used boots, coats, gloves, toques, and blankets for all ages can be dropped off at 232 B North Third Ave. You can also drop off non perishable foods items that will be donated to the Salvation Army.

6) Free Public Skate - Dec 21st from 1 - 2:30 pm
Free Public Skate - Dec 21st from 1 - 2:30 pm at the Recreation Complex - sponsored by Johnston Meier Insurance Agencies. Call the Complex for more information at 250-398-7665.

7) Noopa Youth Drop-in Centres - Christmas Dinner Monday Dec 22nd
NOOPA's Christmas dinner is on Monday the 22nd and all youth between the ages of 13-18 are welcome. We will be serving turkey and ham with all the fixings as well as handing stocking to youth in attendance.  Our goal is to have dinner served at 5:30. "Noopa" is a place for youth ages 13-18 to 'hang out'. All youth welcome. Free meals, shower, laundry, tv, internet, pool table, foosball, guitars and piano. Monday to Thursday 3pm - 8pm and Fridays 4pm - 10pm.

8) Miocene Christmas Eve Alert - Santa is coming by this Christmas Eve
Santa will be travelling through the Miocene Fire Protection District on the 24th starting at 4pm (first stop is at the cattle guard on the Spokin Lake Road and will then travel down the road (and all side roads heading to the Horsefly Road with a quick stop at the Miocene Community Club. Then towards Allpress Road including all side roads, finally onto Rose Drive with his last stop down Branch Drive. The Community Club will be serving hot chocolate to keep everyone warm!

9) Family Fun day at Bull Mountain - Sunday Jan 4th from 1 - 3pm
Skiers of all abilities are invited to try free cross country ski lessons and ride the trails for free during Family Fun Day. For more information please contact Sean Donahue at 250-398-6135.

10) Warm Glow Concert - Saturday Dec 20th at 6:30 pm
The Williams Lake SDA Church's Christmas concert starts at 6:30 this Saturday at the Adventist Church located at 782 Ninth Ave North - call 250-398-5642 for further information. Refreshments will follow the show, and everyone is invited to attend this family friendly event.

11) Spirit of Christmas Giving Tree - until Dec 23rd
The Spirit of Christmas Giving Tree will be setup at Canadian Tire, the Tribune and Advisor, and the Salvation Army. The giving tree has tags on it for a girl or boy and their age who are in need this Christmas. Gifts can be dropped off with a tag at the Salvation Army's donation box next to their service counter until Tuesday Dec 23rd.

12) Operation Red Nose - get a ride home in your own vehicle
As an alternative to a taxi this holiday season, call Operation Red Nose and they can drive your car home for you. Call 250-392-2222 for all the details. Make safety a priority.

13) Annual Christmas Sale at the Recreation Complex - until Dec 24th

14) CMHA's Women's Spirituality Circle's Winter Solstice Celebration - Dec 21st
The Canadian Mental Health Association Multiculturalism Program and Women's Spirituality Circle invite you to Winter Solstice Celebration.

15) Reminder -  Council accepting applications for Heritage and Accessibility Advisory Committees

The City of Williams Lake is currently accepting applications for positions on the Heritage Advisory Committee and the Accessibility Advisory Committee until Jan 9, 2015

Applications must include name, address, home and work telephone numbers, together with an outline of the reasons for your interest in serving on the committee. A Striking Committee of Council will consider all applications.

16) Reminder - Council Now Accepting Nominations for Certificate of Merit Award

City Council is now accepting nominations for 2014 Certificate of Merit Awards to recognize any citizen of the City of Williams Lake or the fringe area of the city that has accomplished an achievement that brings national or international fame to the City of Williams Lake during 2014. Their achievements will be recognized by City Council meeting in early 2015.

To nominate an individual, provide his or her name and a short resume of their contributions for council to consider. Nominations can be dropped off at City Hall by Jan.9, 2015. 18) Reminder - Central Cariboo Arts & Culture Society's 2015 Grant Writing Workshop
GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP
January 8th, 2014, 6pm – 8pm, at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre

This is a free workshop – Register by January 6th with Leah at 778-412-9044 or info@centralcaribooarts.com (Pre-reading is required).

The workshop will introduce commonly made pitfalls in grant applications (e.g. budgeting, project description, etc). It will be focused on the CCACS Project Grant application which is due Jan 30, 2015
