SPC Monthly Meeting Minutes (draft)

June 26, 2017 - 11:30 am – 1:00 pm

Location: Community Futures Office

SPC Housekeeping items

1) Funding from Community Futures (CF) - CF reviewed and approved our application for funding in the amount of $2500  for our Community Poverty Reduction project.

Action item - Send a thank-you letter to Community Futures for their contribution

Action item - Send a thank-you letter to CCPL for their partnership on this Poverty Reduction project

2) United Way funding - The SPC applied for funding and will be receiving $2500 from the United Way for the 2017 - 2018 year (operational funding). This is less than half of what we applied for (see action item below).

Action item - strategize around how to increase SPC general funding in the fall.

Cariboo Strong Economic Development Plan

Presentation by Krystin St. Jean, Facilitator for the region wide Economic Development Program entitled Cariboo Strong.

Strategic partnership to find new actions for economic development. To build actions based on opportunities that are identified to build community resiliency and economic development.

Community Development Institute (out of UNBC) was developed in 2004 and has worked in over 40 communities on more than 70 projects including in Tumbler Ridge, Mackenzie, Kitimat and Clearwater.

Economic context: Cariboo Economy based on four strong sectors: Forestry (declining), Mining (declining), Agriculture and tourism, plus the retail and service industries.

Ecological downturn in the forestry industry and Annual Allowable Cuts in Northern Communities are declining.

Economic trend that Copper prices are also steadily declining.

How is all this going to affect our region? Housing, vulnerable populations, education services, recreation and quality of life services including the not for profits. We need to think long term (e.g. preschool aged children, not those currently graduating high school).

True Resiliency includes looking at the whole picture.

Work already completed in the region didn't move action plans forward, Cariboo Strong intends to.

Key Investments in the community:

-Foundational investments (human capacity, infrastructure)

-Transformational investments (information, expertise, leadership, networks, collaboration and partnership)

What we want to achieve:

Short Term (24 - 36 month) - expand economic base, show early results.

Long Term (coming decades) - transform the economic equation.

Community Action groups to focus on action and results, and achieve co-ownership, build leadership.

How work will be completed in the Cariboo:

Engage community and partners, create action "on the ground" and develop metrics to track and measure progress.

"Housing Action Group" held a forum and distributed survey.

REPORT of survey is on 100 Mile House website.

Questions for our group:

What are the challenges present in the community?

What are the opportunities?

What are the short term actions that can be taken to build momentum to long term change and transformation?

Bruce - what are the next steps (presentation was good, but now how could we participate)?

Carla - brought up our Vancouver foundation discussion, and mentioned Accessibility Committee (who is already working on projects like those described from 100 Mile House example).

Jessica - how could a group access project assistance such as those from 100 Mile?

Anne - having Krystin at our table more often would be greatly valuable.

Huge opportunity for "low barrier employment" (part of social entrepreneurism)

Action - SPC discuss how we can participate in Cariboo Strong more at a future meeting.

Roundtable Updates

Larry Stranberg - Venture Connect programs in the fall, including breakfast for bankers, real estate agents and accountants. Community Futures has been very busy and there are many great ideas being developed locally.

Carla Bullinger - Communities That Care (CTC) Apr 7th meeting focused on depressive symptoms. Very well attended with diverse audience including youth engagement. A number of action plans have been developed and much work has been already done. In the fall there will be a presentation on these results.

Bruce Mack - IMSS is still ending it's local services, but the CCPL will be taking over this contract and the office and services will remain in our community.

Anne Burrill - Housing First has been funded for another year (includes rent supplements and support for 15 people).

Linda Berg - Free activities this summer with the Boys & Girls Club. Baseball on Tuesdays starting in July and Mountain Biking is also very popular. Canadian Tire Jumpstart information was also shared. (Details will be shared in updates).

Kathie Vilkas - First Hike for Hospice (raised $3000 for the programs) and the weather was wonderful. This event will be held annually. AGM will be in September.
